Grief & Loss Counselling

Counselling can support you to move through your experience of grief and loss, in a safe and confidential environment.

Losing someone or something that you love or care about can be extremely painful. Many people in this situation report feeling a number of different emotions including sadness, denial, hopelessness, confusion, and even anger. Whilst these are all normal responses to a significant loss, it’s important to note that there are healthy and unhealthy ways to deal with these emotions.

What is grief?

Grief is the natural response to loss. It is the emotional pain you feel when someone or something is taken away from you. Whilst grief is primarily associated with the death of a loved one, it can also be experienced in response to any form of loss including:

  • Divorce or separation
  • The ending of any significant relationship
  • Loss of employment
  • Loss of financial security
  • The death of a pet
  • Loss of health
  • Loss of freedom
  • Existential crisis

Some common questions about grief are:

  • How long will this go on for?
  • How do I get over it?
  • Is there a right and wrong way to grieve?
  • Is what I’m feeling normal?

It is important to note that everyone will experience grief differently, and whilst there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there are healthy and unhealthy ways to manage the experience. If we’re using unhealthy means of coping with grief, such as increased alcohol consumption or withdrawing from the world, then we may inadvertently prolong our experience of grief, or create an additional issue we’ll also have to address at some stage.
