Anxiety Counselling
Anxiety can take many forms, for some it’s an underlying feeling of stress, nervousness, worry or tension that’s always in the background. For others it’s more situational only becoming noticeable when confronted with a specific situation. Sometimes anxiety is a feeling of fear that drives a compulsion to check and double check things before a person can leave their home, and for others anxiety is the experience of persistent negative thoughts that seem impossible to switch off.
Although anxiety is an unpleasant state, it’s important to note that anxiety in its intended form isn’t ‘bad’ nor is it something we would ‘want to get rid of’. Anxiety is a normal human emotion and can be quite useful in helping us to avoid dangerous situations and to motivate us to solve everyday problems. However, if left unchecked anxiety can quickly move from being a helpful adaptive response, to an unhelpful maladaptive response that can lead to self-esteem issues, depression, panic attacks, distress in social situations, relationship issues, problems at work, and even insomnia.
Whilst maladaptive anxiety can be debilitating and scary, it’s important to know that anxiety is highly treatable, particularly when therapy is commenced early. In fact, between 65 to 70 percent of people who engage in counselling for anxiety, experience significant symptom relief within just a few sessions. Therefore, if you are experiencing anxiety symptoms, there’s no need to struggle any longer!
Counselling is a proven process to resolve anxiety and can provide an alternative to symptom suppression. Counselling can provide the opportunity to look beyond your presenting symptoms in order to understand what’s generating your experience of anxiety, whilst also providing you with the tools and strategies required to successfully move forward.
