Clinical Supervision
At Mind Health Counselling we’re passionate about supporting therapists to do what they do best!
Unlike more conventional roles, counsellors generally work in isolation and within the confines of confidentiality. This means when we finish a day at the office, we’re unable to go home and discuss our work, or debrief with family or friends. Working in isolation in this way is obviously necessary, however, without the right support we risk becoming overwhelmed or lost in the work. This is why attending regular supervision is important. Supervision offers a professional space for you to debrief your therapeutic work, and to work collaboratively with a more experienced therapist. Working in this way ensures you feel supported in your work, and that you continue to uphold best practice and adhere to counselling ethics.
At Mind Health Counselling our accredited supervisor Rachael Cassell is passionate about supervision and supporting counsellors in their personal and professional journeys.
“Supervision is more than just a box we’re required to tick, it’s an incredible space that can support us to reach our potential” - Rachael Cassell
Group or Individual Supervision
At Mind Health Counselling we offer both group and individual supervision sessions. Both spaces offer unique benefits.
Individual sessions allow you to use the entire hour to debrief your work, ask questions, explore case formulations or discuss concerns. Individual sessions offer a more tailored experience as the time is set aside just for you.
Our group sessions are capped at 4 participants and the supervisor, and generally run for 2 hours. Working within a group allows you to collaborate with other therapists as well as the supervisor. If you’re new to counselling, group supervision can be a good way to develop a professional network and to learn through listing to other counsellors discussing their work. Obviously in a group setting the time is shared, so depending on the needs of all group members, you may only have a limited amount of time to discuss your work and ask questions.
If you’re unsure which format might be best for you, feel free to give us a call 0402 805 715 to discuss your individual needs.
Choosing a Supervisor
Choosing the right supervisor is important as it can be the difference between attending supervision to simply meet the requirements of your registration, and attending supervision to develop and extend yourself as a therapist. No matter where you are in your professional journey, supervision has the potential to be a profound source of both personal and professional transformation and growth, a place of connection, and even a place of refuge from the challenges we sometime face in our work.
Before seeking a supervisor, take some time to consider what kind of supervisor you’re wanting to work with, and what you’re wanting from supervision. If you’re unsure of the answer to these questions, the following suggestions may help to clarify this for you.
- Read some profiles to get a sense of what each supervisor is offering, and which approach might be the best fit for you.
- Feel free to speak with any potential supervisors before making an appointment. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions about their experience and how they conduct a session.
- Consider whether group supervision or individual supervision might be the best fit for you based on your professional needs.
Taking the time to source the right supervisor, will ensure you get the most out of supervision for both you and your clients.
